In the past, a large emphasis has been placed on teaching literacy concepts such as letter identification, sound recognition and phonological awareness in Early Childhood classrooms to set up children for success in Kindergarten and beyond. However, recent research suggests that mastering mathematical skills may actually be more critical to student success longer term.
In our play-based environments, children are provided with materials that encourage them to count, measure, compare quantities, make patterns, record data, sort objects, add/subtract, and practice shape recognition. Teachers also incorporate music and movement. Activities to promote development of these skills through auditory listening and kinesthetic movement. In addition, high quality children’s literature is also utilized to introduce and reenforce mathematical language and vocabulary.
